How to Use AI at University: 10 Effective Methods for Students

AI can support students in studying, research, planning and career preparation. Discover 10 ways to use AI productively, safely and ethically at university.

AI and Learning

When used correctly, AI is a powerful tool that makes learning easier, offers different perspectives and helps you plan your study process. However, it is always your responsibility to question and verify the information AI provides and to protect your own thinking process.

What Does Using AI at University Mean?

Using AI at university does not mean having a tool do all your academic work. AI can be used as a supportive assistant for things like explaining topics you do not understand, preparing a study plan, developing ideas and testing your own knowledge.

The goal is not to hand over the responsibility for thinking and learning to AI, but to develop your skills in analysis, interpretation, critical questioning and original work while benefiting from technology.

Basic rule: Use AI not as an answer machine that thinks for you, but as a study partner that supports your thinking.

1. Simplify Topics You Do Not Understand

You can ask AI to explain a complex concept you encountered in class in simpler language. Specifying your level, your department and which part you do not understand will help you get a more useful answer.

Example: “Explain this concept in a way a first-year university student can understand, using an example from everyday life.”

After reading the explanation, try to explain the topic in your own words. That way, you can check whether you have truly understood it instead of just seeing the answer.

2. Create a Personal Study Plan

You can create a workable study plan by specifying your courses, exam dates, free time and the topics you struggle with. For the plan to be realistic, clearly state your daily study time and break intervals.

Instead of accepting the generated plan as is, re-evaluate it according to your own routine. AI cannot know your energy level, commute time or personal responsibilities better than you do.

3. Have AI Create Practice Questions for You

You can have AI create multiple-choice, true-false or open-ended questions about the topic you are studying. Asking it to let you answer first rather than showing the answers immediately supports active learning.

For questions you answer incorrectly, instead of asking directly for the correct answer, you can request small hints to help you find your mistake.

4. Organize Your Notes

You can get support from AI to organize the headings of your own lecture notes, identify repetitive sections or categorize key concepts.

However, if your lecture notes contain personal data, student information or institutional content that should not be shared, do not upload them to an AI tool.

5. Use It During the Brainstorming Stage

You can use AI to generate different topic ideas for a project, presentation or research. Instead of settling for the first suggestion, ask for different approaches, opposing views and options to make your work more original.

Treat the ideas AI offers as a starting point. Developing the topic, making choices and contributing something original should be up to you.

6. Improve Your Writing

You can get feedback from AI to identify awkward phrasing, repetition or hard-to-understand sections in a text you have written yourself.

Instead of having the entire text rewritten, using requests such as “Point out the unclear parts of this paragraph” or “Suggest ways to improve the writing” helps you preserve your own writing skills.

7. Practice a Foreign Language

You can use AI for foreign language speaking practice, vocabulary study and writing feedback. You can ask it to create short dialogues suited to your level and explain the mistakes you make.

Rather than just having it translate, asking why a particular word or sentence structure is preferred makes the learning process more effective.

8. Support Your Presentation Preparation

You can create a logical content flow for your presentation, come up with alternative titles and prepare for questions that may be asked at the end of your presentation.

Instead of memorizing your presentation script, try to master the topic. Asking AI to generate questions as if a different audience were listening to you can help you improve your delivery.

9. Use It for Career Preparation

AI can be used to review the wording in your CV, prepare for interview questions and identify the skills you need to develop for your target profession.

Do not add experience or skills you do not actually have to your CV. Do not upload your personal information, phone number, address or private documents to tools whose security you are not sure of.

10. Question Your Own Knowledge and Assumptions

Instead of only getting answers that agree with you on a topic, you can ask about opposing views, gaps and alternative explanations. This approach supports your critical thinking.

Ask AI to explain which parts of its answer it is not sure about. Then check the important information against reliable and up-to-date sources.

5 Questions to Ask Yourself When Using AI

1. Have I verified this information with a reliable source?

2. Are the original thinking and interpretation in this work my own?

3. Have I followed the AI usage rules of the course and the instructor?

4. Have I shared any personal or confidential information?

5. If required, have I clearly stated that I used AI?

Is All Information Provided by AI Accurate?

No. AI tools can produce incorrect, incomplete or outdated information. They may suggest books, articles, links and sources that do not actually exist.

Be especially careful to check academic, legal, health-related or numerical information against reliable sources. Do not add a bibliography generated by AI to your work without verifying it.

Academic Ethics Warning

Submitting text generated by AI as if it were your own work may conflict with academic integrity rules. Since the rules may differ for each course and assessment, pay attention to your instructor's guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is using AI prohibited at university?

The rules may vary depending on the university, the course and the type of work. Before using AI, you should check the rules set by your instructor.

Is it ethical to prepare assignments with AI?

Using AI to support learning is not the same as having the tool do all the work. Originality, transparency and course rules are the key criteria.

Can sources provided by AI be used?

You should not add a suggested source to your bibliography without verifying that it actually exists and supports the relevant information.

What information should not be uploaded to AI?

Identity details, phone numbers, addresses, health information, passwords, student documents and institutional or research data that should not be shared must not be uploaded.

The most powerful use of AI is not getting the answer directly, but learning to ask better questions and think more deeply.
