A Future Beyond CRISPR: A Science Meeting with Prof. Dr. Chase Beisel from the Rare Diseases Club
At the “Future in Rare #2” event organized by the Üsküdar University Rare Diseases Club, Prof. Dr. Chase Beisel, known for his pioneering work on CRISPR systems, offered a striking perspective on the future of genome engineering.
In the second session of its “Future in Rare” event series, which aims to raise awareness in science and health, the Üsküdar University Rare Diseases Club hosted Prof. Dr. Chase Beisel, a world-renowned name in the field of CRISPR systems. Held online, the event drew strong interest from 143 participants and was a powerful example of scientific exchange.
In his presentation titled “Harnessing CRISPR Diversity,” Prof. Dr. Beisel emphasized that CRISPR technologies are not limited to classical genome editing methods and discussed the extraordinary biological diversity of CRISPR-Cas systems found in nature. Using examples, he explained how these immune mechanisms, which evolved in bacteria and archaea, can be turned into transformative tools in biotechnology and medicine.

The presentation particularly emphasized that CRISPR is not a single technology but a broad biological toolkit made up of new enzymes, regulatory systems and programmable nucleic acid interactions. Referring to current research on non-canonical CRISPR systems, Prof. Beisel drew attention to the new possibilities these systems offer in areas such as precise gene regulation, RNA targeting, diagnostic applications and immune engineering.
Throughout the event, how basic biological research can be translated into real-world applications was addressed within a strong scientific framework. The examples shared by Prof. Dr. Beisel clearly showed how nature-inspired biological diversity can shape the medical and biotechnological solutions of the future.

By presenting participants with a vision of programmable biology that goes beyond genome editing, the “Future in Rare #2” event offered an inspiring and eye-opening perspective on the future of CRISPR technologies.
