A Journey Through Time with the Sociology Club: From Archaeology to Social Traces
With its "Archaeology Museum Trip," the Üsküdar University Sociology Club had the opportunity to examine on-site the social structures in the depths of history. On the cultural trip organized to closely observe the deep-rooted relationship between the disciplines of history and sociology, students explored the heritage of civilizations, the evolution of social life and the cultural codes of ancient societies in the captivating atmosphere of the Istanbul Archaeology Museum.
To combine theoretical knowledge with field experience, the Üsküdar University Sociology Club organized a technical trip to the Istanbul Archaeology Museum, one of Istanbul's most important cultural landmarks. The event offered a unique laboratory setting for students who wanted to see through concrete examples that social changes and structures do not belong only to the present day but have roots deep in history.
The main focus of the trip was how archaeological finds can be read as sociological data and the effects of the daily lives of past societies on today's social structure. At this special gathering, attended by a group of 12 students, assessments were made of social hierarchies, religious rituals and settlement practices through the museum's thousands-of-years-old artifacts.
In the examinations carried out among the rich collections of the Istanbul Archaeology Museum, the socio-cultural heritage of a vast geography stretching from Mesopotamia to Anatolia was studied. Discussing class distinctions and the family structures of the period through ancient inscriptions and sculptures, students had the opportunity to strengthen their sociological perspectives with a historical foundation.
While the interdisciplinary importance of the relationship between history and sociology was emphasized throughout the event, participants also experienced firsthand the value that preserving cultural heritage holds for social memory. This scientific journey through the museum's atmosphere enabled students not only to gain academic knowledge but also to build cultural knowledge.
Emphasizing that the way to understand society lies in analyzing the past correctly, Sociology Club officials stated that such field trips and cultural events will continue every term. The event was productively concluded with a brief evaluation chat in the museum garden and a group photo.
