A Screening That Brings History to the Silver Screen: Napoleon at Üsküdar University
The Napoleon film screening organized by the Üsküdar University History Club brought the narrative power of cinema together with a historical perspective, offering participants a thought-provoking viewing experience.
Reading History Through Cinema: A Journey Through the Film Napoleon

The Napoleon Film Screening organized by the Üsküdar University History Club was a high-quality arts and culture event that showed how history can be read not only in the pages of books but also through visual narratives. As part of the event, the film about the life of Napoleon Bonaparte and the political atmosphere of his era was watched together with club members. The role of cinema in telling history formed the core framework of the event.
The screening did more than offer participants a film-viewing experience; it also gave them the opportunity to observe how historical events are reconstructed through the language of cinema. While the scenes in the film prompted reflection on the concepts of leadership, power, war and authority, the differences between historical reality and artistic interpretation also stood out. In this respect, the event moved viewers out of a passive position and made them part of an intellectual process.
At the event, which had no speakers or panelists, the natural conversation that developed among club members after the film stood out. Participants shared their own interpretations by comparing Napoleon’s historical persona with the character portrayed in the film. These exchanges, made without any academic obligation, showed that historical thinking is also possible on an everyday, accessible level.
The event demonstrated that the discipline of history is not limited to the transfer of theoretical knowledge, and that it becomes far more effective and memorable when supported by powerful narrative tools such as cinema. The atmosphere created by visual storytelling gave participants a different perspective, especially in sensing the spirit of historical periods.
With its structure combining cultural and academic awareness, the Napoleon Film Screening held by the Üsküdar University History Club took its place among the student events under HCS. The event also set an inspiring example for similar events bringing together history and cinema.
