A Tribute to a Giant of the World of Thought: History and Culture Club Visits Cemil Meriç
As part of its "Tribute Visits Series", the Üsküdar University History and Culture Club commemorated Hüseyin Cemil Meriç, an exceptional figure in the history of Turkish thought, at his grave. During the visit held at Karacaahmet Cemetery on January 15, 2026, the master’s ideas and the deep marks he left on our literature were remembered once again.
The Üsküdar University History and Culture Club continues the meaningful series of projects it launched to remember the architects of our cultural heritage and keep their ideas alive. In the second part of the series, on January 15, 2026, the club visited Hüseyin Cemil Meriç, the great thinker who devoted his life to learning and enlightenment.
Gathering at his grave in Karacaahmet Cemetery, club members remembered Cemil Meriç’s unshakable place in Turkish intellectual life and how he has illuminated generations with works such as "Mağaradakiler" and "Bu Ülke." During the visit, the master’s memorable words, "Humans were created to be loved, and things to be used. The cause of the chaos in the world is that things are loved and people are used," were read aloud, and participants reflected on the intellectual legacy he left against the confusion of values in today’s world.
Held with a small group of participants, this meaningful visit aimed to strengthen the bond of the younger generation with national and spiritual values. On this tribute journey on January 15, 2026, Meriç’s call to return to one’s library, to become a book and to enlighten was re-emphasized as a life compass for the students of the History and Culture Club.
Club officials stated that through the "Tribute Visits Series" they aim to visit the valuable figures raised in these lands, take up the torch they left behind and spread this awareness on campus. The moments spent at the master’s grave created a spiritual atmosphere that reinforced the participants’ sense of cultural belonging.
At the end of the program, the visit concluded with prayers for the soul of the great thinker. Carried out under the Directorate of Health, Culture and Sports (HCS), this high-quality cultural trip once again demonstrated Üsküdar University’s educational vision of building bridges between the past and the future and its profile of students committed to their values.
