Generations Meet in Sociology: Guidance from Alumni to the Sociologists of the Future
With its "Alumni Meeting" event, the Üsküdar University Sociology Club brought together students and alumni from different years under one roof. At this meaningful gathering held in the Sokrates Hall on the South Campus, alumni's experiences in the business world and the strategic steps they took on the career ladder shed light on the path of current students. Moderated by Berat Dağ, the event turned into a warm platform for sharing experience.
The Üsküdar University Sociology Club organized the "Alumni Meeting" to answer questions about professional life after graduation and to reinforce students' sense of belonging to the university. At the event, held in the Sokrates Hall of Block E on the South Campus, the practical relevance of sociology in the field and the career journeys of alumni were discussed in detail. The event served as an important guide for students wishing to explore how academic knowledge is applied in the business world.
In the sessions moderated by Berat Dağ, alumni shared their experiences across a wide spectrum, from job search processes to roles in non-governmental organizations, and from academia to the private sector. While the importance of the analytical perspective that a sociology degree brings to the business world was emphasized, students received valuable advice on the competencies they should focus on during their undergraduate studies.
Held in an interactive atmosphere with 37 students in attendance, the meeting became a networking space where students could ask alumni questions directly. By candidly sharing not only their successes but also the challenges they faced and how they coped with them, the alumni boosted the motivation of their future colleagues. The event once again demonstrated how critical such gatherings are for career planning in a multifaceted discipline like sociology.
Another focus of the event was making the bond between alumni and students sustainable. Members of the Sociology Club had the chance to hear first-hand how alumni's observations in the field align with the theoretical framework learned in class. The experiences shared helped students feel better equipped and more confident in the face of post-graduation uncertainties.
At the end of the meeting, the Sociology Club board highlighted the role of such now-traditional events in strengthening alumni-student solidarity. Participants stated that the meeting, held in the inspiring atmosphere of the Sokrates Hall, made a great contribution to their professional vision. The event concluded with pledges of collaboration on future projects and a group souvenir photo.
