The Pulse of OHS Beats Underground: Technical Trip to the Eurasia Tunnel
On a technical trip to the Eurasia Tunnel, one of Istanbul’s strategic locations, the Scenario-Based Occupational Health and Safety Club examined OHS practices and emergency scenarios in mega projects on site.
To reinforce students’ theoretical knowledge with field experience, the Üsküdar University Scenario-Based Occupational Health and Safety Club headed to the Eurasia Tunnel, one of Istanbul’s most important transportation projects. On the technical trip held on December 25, 2025, a group of 50 students had the opportunity to observe the vital role of occupational health and safety (OHS) in large-scale infrastructure projects.

During the examinations conducted on the trip under the guidance of Özgür Şener, the tunnel’s construction process, operation phase and the high-level safety protocols in place were explained in detail. Participants had the chance to hear technical information directly from an expert on how the physical, chemical and ergonomic risks that may arise in enclosed and confined spaces such as tunnels are managed.
The emergency management presentation, one of the most notable parts of the event, focused on fire safety, ventilation systems and evacuation scenarios. Seeing the technological equipment and response stations inside the tunnel firsthand, students grasped how precious every second is in a potential crisis and how engineering solutions are integrated with OHS.

In addition to raising students’ professional awareness, this education-focused technical trip allowed them to see the discipline of field practice firsthand. By witnessing how the concepts of "risk analysis" and "preventive measures" covered in their theoretical courses are meticulously applied in such a complex structure, participants added a professional perspective to their academic knowledge.
At the end of the event, Scenario-Based Occupational Health and Safety Club officials emphasized the importance of such site visits in gaining professional competence. Supporting Üsküdar University’s practice-oriented education vision, this event proved once again how critical the OHS discipline is, not only on paper but at every moment of life and even meters below ground.
