What is culture?

Culture is set of patterns of human activity within a community or a social group and the symbolic structures that give significance to such activity. It includes codes of manners, clothing, language, religion, rituals, art, customs, music and folklore, architecture, food and culinary.

What is called “activity” here is the customs such as eating, drinking, having fun and making a living. “symbolic”, on the other hand, includes the feelings and thoughts of the nation, beliefs and morals, traditions and customs.

Cultural Scope and Characteristics

Culture is like a river flowing from generation to generation in a society. It nourishes the generations and societies that it reaches with the social minerals and vitamins it has collected from the geographies and historical layers. Culture has many characteristics.

Some of them are;

  • Culture; the soul of societies,
  • Culture; feeds on history.
  • Culture; influenced and shaped by geographies,
  • Culture; a constantly developing and renewed state,
  • Culture; creates life philosophy of societies,
  • Culture; disciplines societies,
  • Culture; unites and integrates the societies.

Since it is a unity with the characteristics of change, development and renewal over time, culture is a living and natural entity. It has a dynamic structure, not a static structure at all. It is born and raised by and according to the society. For him, it is not outside of life, but inside it. Society moulds like a river that is shaped according to the geographical conditions and flows without stopping.

Culture is also a social entity. The reason is that culture has a unique order and rules that dominate the society by rising above the individuals. Behaviors and external interventions against this order and rules prevent its healthy path and jeopardize its existence. In such cases, cultural elements also show the necessary reaction. This reaction manifests itself in the form of social unrest and cultural depression. Culture has a national personality structure as it is a product of the peculiar behaviors of each society. This originality is ensured by feeding from its own resources and staying true to its essence.
