Practical Advice for Students at the Start of the Semester
The opening of the academic year is the most exciting time for every young person starting university. Students start the new academic year with good wishes and hope that the whole year will continue in the same way. However, there is as much anxiety as excitement in education life. Whether you are a freshman or an upperclassman, it is quite normal to worry about feeling ready for the new semester. Because school means a hectic schedule of classes, assignments with deadlines approaching, and most importantly, time management.
If you are a young person starting university, you may have several questions. What will my university environment be like? Will I be successful? What if I don't make friends? These are the most common questions that every new university student asks themselves. Even though you are the only one who can answer them, some tips will help you get rid of your worries.
1. Focus on the New Semester from Day One
Students need to focus on this pace from the first day of school to remember that they are involved in all assessments throughout the semester and need to perform well to be successful. There are so many distractions during the day. The important thing is to keep the balance. So try to put in enough effort for a great semester. Remember, you are as successful as you strive and as determined as you are confident.
2. Get Organized
During student life, it is important to be organized. This can be a group activity, a university event or the background process of a big organization. For this, first of all, create a continuous to-do list for yourself. It can be daily, weekly or monthly. Being up to date with plans is the basis of being organized. Whatever your tasks and plans are, the important thing is to maintain a highly organized attitude.
3. It's Normal to Feel Anxious
It is normal to feel anxious about exams, projects and homework. You may feel stressed or fed up because you will be at an intense pace during the semester. However, the important thing here is to prevent the continuity of anxiety. Because anxiety brings negativity in the long run. Thinking that this stressful situation will never end is the main reason why you will fail. If you think that this state of anxiety has reached serious dimensions, you can request support from a counselor on campus. They will definitely help you.
4. Limit Phone Use
The use of the internet and social media is quite common nowadays, especially among young people. Of course, we are not saying to leave it completely, but limit its use so as not to interrupt education. Of course, it is very important to use your phone to keep up to date or to keep up with innovation, but it is obvious that technology can cause difficulty in focusing as a result of overuse. The biggest struggle of every student during the semester is usually procrastination. For this reason, do not use your phone during study hours and give your full focus to the lesson, surf the internet during your 10-minute or 30-minute breaks. In this way, it is possible to maintain the balance between study and social life.
5. Socialize, Join a Student Club
Student clubs are one of the most important platforms to spice up university life. Socializing and expanding the circle of friends are the most important things that motivate students to study. University is an important platform where you can make new friends and expand your social circle. Therefore, do not hesitate to communicate or take the first step.
6. Be Confident
Every day we grow up and make new decisions. Making mistakes is the nature of youth. That is why you should not give up in the face of mistakes and lose confidence in yourself. Remember that confidence is the most important factor behind important decisions. Maintaining the relationship between self-confidence and discipline is a sign that you can do better in difficult situations instead of giving up.
7. Create a Good Work Environment
To work, you need an environment free of distractions. From excess furniture to color harmony, many things can distract you. A desk with only what you need will often be enough to keep you focused. Establishing this order at the beginning of the semester will also help you to increase your motivation for your lessons. The most important thing to watch out for in the study area is the use of phones, tablets or computers. Remember to use technology only when you need it to avoid distractions!
8. Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Help
Most students try to do everything on their own because they are afraid to ask for help. However, this can often stress you out and make you feel anxious. Don't be afraid to ask for help when learning a new subject, working in a team or taking part in a project. There are a number of staff on campus waiting to help you. So ask for support whenever you need it, before it's too late.
9. Be Realistic in Your Goals
The most important thing you need to move towards a specific goal is motivation. For this, you must first realize your own potential. Determining exactly what you want and how you want it will also reveal the effort you need to put in. For example, you may want to improve your English by the end of the semester or you may want to realize a project that has never been done before. Of course, there is no such thing as impossible, but realistic goals are very important to keep the belief that you can succeed and not to compromise your energy.
10. Don't Neglect Having Fun
University is the best time to enjoy your youth. You are still young and your most important responsibility is to work to build a strong future. There are lots of people to meet and countless places to explore. Go out with your friends, explore new areas of study, participate in university events and most importantly have fun.
Maintaining your mental health and not compromising your energy throughout your student life is important for you to be a successful student. Therefore, you should be confident in yourself and be aware of what you can do. In this content, we have shared some tips that we hope will be useful for you for the new academic year.
